Duties & Responsibilities

  • Communicate with Mortgage Servicers information related to property taxes due on township properties.
  • Review, process and record summer deferrals from owners of township properties.
  • Collect Summer and Winter real and personal property taxes.
  • Disburse property tax revenues collected for other municipalities and entities, such as County, Schools, and services contracted such as Fire, Ambulance and Transportation.
  • Receives and deposits all township revenues and payments in approved depositories.
  • Reconciles monthly all Township checking, savings and other deposit accounts.
  • Keep an account of township receipts (revenues) and expenditures.
  • Prepares Monthly Treasurer’s Report for presentation at Township Board Meetings.
  • Audits for accuracy and validity township warrants; issues and mails township disbursement checks.
  • Invests township funds in approved investment accounts to maximize interest revenue for township.
  • Collects delinquent personal property tax.
  • Serves on Election Commission.
  • Contribute to and participate in annual budget process.

Tax Information

Check your Taxes

Residents can check their property tax information for free online. You are required to create an account password and enter a valid email address so you can receive an account confirmation link. If you encounter difficulties with setting up your account call BS&A Software at 855-272-7638. There is a small fee charged by BS&A for non-residents to access the information.
This is a third party service, and we upload the township’s tax information to the site.

You can verify that payments made in the current tax year have been posted and get a PDF copy of your bill. Please allow processing time before payments are posted.

Easy Payment Options

Effective July 1, 2019, we are offering current year property tax payment by phone and through the internet. Types of payments accepted are ECheck (with a small fixed amount fee) and by credit card (with approximately a 3.5% fee).

Mailing payments is strongly encouraged.  If you need a stamped receipt, please send a self addressed stamped envelope. An emailed receipt can be sent if email address is provided. BSA Online also has paid status of bills and can be printed. 

Delinquent Prior Year Tax Payments

Delinquent Taxes are paid to the Shiawassee County Treasurer.  You can call their office at 989-743-2224 to inquire about making payment.  Online information is also available as well as online payments through the Shiawassee County website.

Poverty Exemption

Section 7u of the General Property Tax Act (MCL211.7u) allows a property tax exemption for a principal residence if a person is unable to pay due to poverty.  The township board must annually adopt poverty exemption income guidelines and an asset level test.  To request a poverty exemption, a taxpayer must file the following with the township.

 

  1. Form 5737 Application for MCL211.7u Poverty exemption (Form 5737)
  2. Form 5739 Affirmation of Ownership and Occupancy to Remain Exempt by Reason of Poverty Affirmation of Ownership and Occupancy to Remain Exempt by Reason (michigan.gov)
  3. All required additional documentation. (such as federal/state income tax returns.

Disabled Veteran Exemption

Summer Taxes

Collection Schedule

Tax payments can be mailed to the treasurer. I will also be accepting payment in person at the New Haven Township Hall on these dates:  NO CASH PLEASE. The In person collection schedule is as follows:

Saturday, August 17, 2024 9:00 a.m. – Noon
Saturday, September 14, 2024 9:00 a.m. – Noon
Monday, September 16, 2024 9:00 a.m. – 5 p.m.

There is also a drop box mounted on the outside of the Township Hall where you can drop off your payment.  Payments must be dropped off no later than  5 p.m. on [date], to be considered paid on time.  

If you need to update your mailing address, please contact me.  Changes in ownership  or names must be handled by the County Register of Deeds. I cannot make those changes. 
All bills are mailed to the property owner.    If requested by mortgage companies and lenders,  tax information is sent to them electronically. Check with your mortgage company to be sure they have requested and received your tax information for payment.

Deferrals

Property tax deferments allowed under MCL211.51 can be taken, and the deferred tax then becomes payable on February 14, 2025. 

Please list all parcels you are deferring.  You may list them all on one form.  Please be sure to sign the form before mailing back to me at:

Winter Taxes

Collection Schedule

Because of the delays in mail delivery, postmarks are no longer accepted.  Please allow 7 days for your payment to be received on time. 

You can also pay in person at the New Haven Township Hall on these dates:

Friday December 20, 2024       9 a.m. – Noon

Friday, December 27, 2024      9 a.m. – 5 p.m.

Saturday, January 18, 2025    9 a.m. – Noon

Saturday, February 8, 2025   9 a.m. – Noon

Friday, February 14, 2025     9 a.m. – 5 p.m.  Last Day to Pay Winter taxes and Summer deferred taxes without penalty and interest

Friday, February 28, 2025    9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Last Day to Pay taxes at Township before turning over the the County

 

For the safety of the tax collection team,  and because we don’t have a cash drawer to make change, we request that you DO NOT PAY IN CASH. 

Any payments received by mail after February 28, 2025, or put in the drop box after 5 pm on February 28, 2025, will be returned, as the Township cannot accept payments after the close of business on February 28.  It becomes the responsibility of the  County Treasurer to collect, and they will bill you with the appropriate interest and penalties added to pay your tax obligation in full.
